Captain America is one of the most recognizable and popular heroes in the Marvel Comics Universe. He is a hero who fights to protect the United States of America, based on the American ideals of freedom, liberty and justice.
The character was introduced in Captain America Comics #1 (March 1941 Timely Comics) by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby. Rogers was a frail and sickly young artist who had been given an experimental “super-soldier serum” that gave him the ability to grow to superhuman proportions. After being trapped in ice and dying near the end of World War II, Rogers was revived in modern times.
He is a highly decorated and skilled military veteran with vast U.S. military knowledge and experience in combat strategy, survival, acrobatics, parkour, and piloting.
Despite his high profile and widespread popularity, Rogers often struggles to maintain his ideals as a hero. Some of his recurring foes, such as Red Skull, Baron Zemo and Doctor Faustus, reflect ideologies contrary to the American values that Captain America embodies.
The character has been involved in numerous wars throughout his 78-year comic book career, both as a hero and as part of the Avengers team. In addition, he has been the subject of numerous movies and television series.
He was also a major character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, portrayed by Chris Evans. As part of the Fresh Start rebranding of the Marvel Comics Universe, Rogers appeared in a new solo series. He was later resurrected in the comic books and reunited with his sidekick Bucky Barnes.
