Captain America – Nomad

Despite being trademarked, and thus technically still under Marvel’s ownership, it doesn’t seem like Nomad is on the way back to the big screen. It’s been a while since Chris Evans stepped down as Cap but the character’s name seems to have lingered and is now the handle of another hero — the third Bucky Barnes, who took on the moniker Nomad in 2020. This Nomad is a low-class mercenary and hitchhiker who lives off of the open road, bleak motels, and criminal intrigues.

This Nomad has no connection to the original Captain America but he’s the best known claimant of the Nomad mantle. Initially, Jack Monroe assumed the name and costume of Nomad after being forced to abandon his hero identity by a US government committee in ’Captain America’ #180 (1974). He decided to adopt Nomad as a more “nomadic” incarnation of himself – an identity free of patriotic symbolism that could serve him just as well.

He’s been a part of the Avengers and has a history with HYDRA but more recently, Nomad has popped up in the Heroes Reborn and Onslaught storylines. He also appeared in a four-issue miniseries as Rikki Barnes, the female Bucky from the Heroes Reborn universe.

Nomad is also the adopted son of Cap in the Arnim Zola-constructed world/nightmare called Dimension Z. He’s been seen fighting for humanity in this confusing, mutated mess, even rescuing Leopold (Arnim Zola’s infant son) from Zola’s mechanized clutches.
