In one of the biggest moments in Avengers: Endgame, Captain America is finally able to lift Thor’s mighty Mjolnir. While there are many theories out there on how Steve Rogers became worthy to wield the Hammer, it’s not just a matter of strength. It’s about the person’s character and their purpose.
In the comics, Mjolnir’s enchantment ensures that only those who are righteous can lift it. The wielder can also use Mjolnir to fly through the air at tremendous speeds. Mjolnir can even change course in mid-flight.
However, Thor noticed that the Hammer was becoming heavier to lift as he became King of Asgard in Journey Into Mystery #118. This was because the hammer was recalibrating to fit his new persona. Mjolnir was also damaged by a force beam from the Destroyer and shattered by Molecule Man in Avengers #215.
It’s believed that the hammer’s enchantment will be restored when Hela (Cate Blanchett) destroys Mjolnir in Thor: Ragnarok. However, some believe that Hela may not take the hammer back to Asgard and instead leave it on the moon for the next worthy warrior to find. The Falcon and Winter Soldier showrunner Malcolm Spellman recently told Inverse that his Disney+ series would heavily feature references to this theory in an upcoming episode. It’s not clear if these comments will have any weight to them, but it certainly looks like Captain Rogers is heading to the moon. Hopefully, this will allow Mjolnir to be returned to its rightful place in time for the next war against Thanos.
