After a long buildup and some high-profile deaths, we finally get to see Captain America: Brave New World end. But instead of a cliffhanger for the next chapter, the film delivers a post-credit scene that teases more of the multiverse and a future clash with aliens.
In the scene, Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) visits Samuel Sterns (Tim Blake Nelson), also known as The Leader, at the Raft — the high-security prison for enhanced individuals. Sterns warns Wilson of another calamity and hints that other universes are planning to attack Earth, referencing the same plot point from Batman v Superman.
The scene, which was filmed during the reshoots for Brave New World, sets up the next several movies in the MCU. It hints at a conflict between the enhanced and non-enhanced heroes and aligns with the overarching theme of the Multiversal Saga that will run through Phase Six. It also teases the arrival of Dr. Doom, who will appear in this summer’s Fantastic Four movie in a reality-bending twist that may bring him into Cap’s world.
The post-credits scene also hints at the return of Guardians of the Galaxy characters like Sif and Volstagg, as well as the return of Howard the Duck. Meanwhile, a disguised Winter Soldier infiltrates the Captain America exhibit at the Smithsonian Institution and finds a memorial to Bucky Barnes. After the credits, Groot dances to “I Want You Back” by The Jackson 5 and licks Cosmo’s face, prompting him to say that it was gross.
