For fans of comic book heroes, July 4 is all about one man: Captain America. The stoic hero, who first appeared in 1941, is the embodiment of patriotism for Marvel fans. He’s endured countless arcs and rewrites over the years, and was brought to the big screen by Chris Evans in 2011, where he’s made his mark as perhaps the most popular superhero of all time.
And while Evans isn’t playing the character anymore (he handed over his shield to Sam Wilson in ‘Avengers: Endgame’), people are still celebrating him on Twitter with a nonstop stream of tribute posts. As a result, his birthday has been one to remember.
But there’s something that even the most hard-core Captain America fans might not realize: That today, July 4, is Cap’s real birthday. As EW(opens in new tab) points out, you can see Steve Rogers’ birth date listed as July 4, 1918 on his Certificate of Acceptability when he signs up for the Army in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger.
That means that, if all goes according to plan in the MCU’s future, we might soon be celebrating Carol Danvers’ birthday as well. The superhero, who starred in the blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War and her own self-titled movie, is set to return in 2023. And while it’s not clear yet what role she might play, there is a strong possibility that it could be that of Captain America.
