A weak, frail young man, Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) tries to enlist in the army during World War II but is rejected due to his small size and poor health. He is then approached by a General who offers him a chance to be part of an experiment. The experiment involves injecting him with a serum that stimulates growth, giving Rogers an extremely muscular physique. He is then trained as a warrior and becomes Captain America.
The game is a basic arcade-style game where you control Captain America with the standard buttons: jump, punch, block and dash. You can also throw a shield and use an aerial kick to take out enemies. The controls are responsive and the graphics look good, though some of the backgrounds can appear a little flat at times.
There is a fair amount of variety in the game’s combat, with dozens of bad guys to tangle with. Some of these are easily mopped up with a fling of the shield, while others require more effort. During the course of the game, Cap is also shocked with strange Taser-like devices, stabbed in the shoulder and outright brutalized in one hard-to-watch showdown.
Outside of combat, there are paint-by-numbers platforming challenges that play homage to the Uncharted series. These are fun and well-executed, but they don’t capture the kinetic energy of the film or the feeling of being a superhero. The character’s articulation is a bit disappointing too, with the legs moving okay but the arms being limited to a small range of movement.
